Restoring an old Sylvan Library
Jigglypuff practice
I've tried the paint thinner method to remove some of the art on the card and all I can say is, I don't recommend it. It takes too long it's really damaging to the actual card. There is no way to go back once the art on the card is removed with acetone or paint thinner. It is PERMANENT.
I alter the simple and efficient way, I paint a thin layer of grey as my base and build my colors from there. You can't go wrong with this method. Mistakes are easily scratched off gently with toothpicks.

Seinfeld Cosmo Kramer Alter

Started off by blocking in the main shapes and working on the background. I had to mix my own browns too since I was working only with primary and secondary colors.
5 hours later and here he is..

Hedwig HP
First alter I ever made. I painted this using some really cheap acrylics.
I used stormscape familiar as a base and turned it into Hedwig from Harry Potter.
